Mabie Todd Blackbird- Super Flex (On Ebay)
Here is a made in England Mabie Todd Blackbird self filler. These pens were Mabie Todd’s budget line. Nevertheless, they are a great sturdy pen with decent girth that often have nice flex nibs. The pen is made of BCHR that has faded some to a dark brown. The chasing is worn on the body, though a bit more crisp on the cap. The nickel plated trim also shows it’s age. Both the lever and clip have some plate loss as you can see. Imprints are still pretty good. The 14kt. Mabie Todd Blackbird nib is a great writing fine. Quite smooth and just the right ink flow (at least I think so). The nib is quite bouncy and responsive with a good flex range going from 0.4mm to 1.9mm. I’m not sure why, but I really enjoy flexing with this pen. Hung onto a little longer than normal. It works best with a good “lubby” ink (that’s Pilot Shin-Ryoku in the pics). With thinner inks you can get some railroading if you really push the pen.
