Waterman 52V – Good/Super Flex

Waterman 52V – GOOD/ SUPER FLEX (On Ebay)

Here is a good Waterman 52V in BCHR with nickel trim. The BCHR has browned to a dark brown. The chasing has worn some but still has a little bit of texture and is visible. Imprints are good and crisp. The nickel plated trim looks pretty good. A little bit of scuffing on the clip but no plate loss that I could see. The Waterman #2 14kt. nib is a smooth writing XF (0.3mm). It is about a 4 of 10 in wetness. The flex on this nib is a bit difficult to categorize. It’s on the stiffer side of super flex with decent responsiveness. It’s really on the border between good and super flex. Flow keeps up well with flexing, so you won’t have much or any railroading to worry about. Overall, a nice 52V.

Waterman 52 1/2V (Factory Italic) – GOOD FLEX (SOLD)

Waterman 52 1/2V (Factory Italic) – Good Flex  (On Ebay)

This a BCHR Waterman 52 1/2 V in decent condition. The BCHR has browned pretty significantly. The chasing is worn though visible. The imprints are also worn though mostly readable. This pen appears to have received a replacement lever at some point in its life as the ring top is rolled gold and the lever is nickel. The lever is in good shape as is the ring top. The 14kt. Waterman #2 nib is a factory italic (about 0.6mm wide). The nib does have some decent flex that comes pretty easy. Italic nibs do enhance the flex nicely and this nib is no exception. A neat little pen.

SIZE:  4 1/4″ Capped

Waterman 54 – SUPER FLEX (XXF Nib) (SOLD)

Waterman 54 – Super Flex (XXF Nib)  (On Ebay)

Here is a Waterman 54 in BCHR. The black hard rubber has faded a bit but is still fairly black. The chasing is worn. It’s visible but has lost much of its texture. The chasing on the barrel is better. The imprints are still quite good. The nickel plated trim is in decent condition. There is some very minor pitting on the clip and some wear as well, but I don’t see actual plate loss. The nib on this pen is one of the most sought after nibs: a XXF with flex. This 14kt. Waterman #4 is a 0.2mm (XXF) with some nice flex up to 1.7.mm. The flex is a pretty soft super flex, though not a wet noodle. It has good responsiveness and nice flow. It writes normally pretty smoothly for such a fine tip.

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline – Super Flex! (SOLD)

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline – Super Flex – (See Price Here)

This is a standard size Wahl-Eversharp Skyline in solid black. The gold-filled trim in in good condition with just a little bit of plate loss on the middle part of the lever. There is some light scratching throughout as is typical with these pens and most noticeable in the black models, but it is all very light and much has buffed out nicely. The cap has worn some rings on the barrel when it is screwed on an off. The 14kt. Eversharp nib is a wet writing F that really feels like a medium due to it’s wetness. It is smooth and juicy and flexes with ease up to 1.9mm. This is one of the softer flexing Skyline nibs I have used. They are generally a bit stiffer, but this one is nearing wet noodle status. The feed has no issues keeping up with flex work and dumps the ink on the page when flexing. You’ll get a lot of sheen with this pen.

SIZE:  5 1/4″ Capped

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline – Semi-Flex (SOLD)

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline – Semi-Flex – (On Ebay)

Here is a burgundy Skyline Standard size with a gold-filled cap. The pen is in decent condition. The main blemish on the pen is that there are tiny dings and scratches throughout the cap, though I do not see any plate loss on it. There is a tiny bit of plate loss on the middle of the lever. There is some very light scratching here and there on the body, but it is very minor and has mostly buffed out. The Eversharp 14kt. nib is a nice, smooth writing XF/F (0.35mm). It has about a medium wetness. I would say 4/10 in wetness, which seems positively dry compared to the typical gushing wetness of most Skylines. The nib does have some decent flex to it going up to 1.4mm. However, it is a bit stiffer than a “typical” Skyline flex nib and lacks the responsiveness of higher quality flex pens. Still, it has some easy to come by line variation.

SIZE:  5 1/4″ Capped

Waterman 12 – SUPER FLEX (SOLD)

Waterman 12 Eye Dropper – SUPER FLEX  (On Ebay)

Here is a Waterman 12 Eyedropper with patent dates of 1884, 1899 and  1903. This pen has two gold-filled bands on the barrel with a very lovely engraving. The initials on the band read “M.E.P.” The hard rubber has faded to a dark brown. The chasing has worn on the barrel. It is visible on places but smooth in others. The chasing on the barrel, though, is still quite good. The imprints are a little worn but still very readable and crisp. There are some teeth marks on the top of the cap (see pic). The 14kt. Waterman #2 nib is a very nice writing XF (0.3mm) that flexes quite easily up to 1.6mm. The pen has some very good responsiveness making for some very nice flex writing. The Waterman 12 is a classic and being an eyedropper holds plenty of ink and you don’t have to worry about railroading. Excellent pen!

SIZE:  5 1/4″ Capped

NIB: Waterman #2, XF to BB (0.3mm-1.6mm),  SUPER FLEX (See “Grading Flex Nibs” for How I Grade)

Wahl BCHR Ring Top – Super Flex (SOLD)

20170117_150024

Wahl BCHR Ring Top – Super Flex

Here is a Wahl Vest size pen (4 1/2″ capped) in BCHR. It is in very good condition. The black hard rubber is still, well, black. The chasing is excellent and the imprint on the top of the cap is still readable. The gold filled trim looks very good. There is a tiny bit of brassing on the edges of the bands, but I could only see with magnification. The pen is engraved “A. McGhee,” who a famous artist. Kidding. I have no idea this person is, but I’m sure he/she was/is very special to someone. A. Mchee did have teeth and left some bite marks on the section (see pic), but there aren’t really any marks anywhere else. The 14kt. Wahl #2 nib is a very nice, wet, and smooth writing F (0.4mm). It is a tad oblique (see pic). Flex is quite easy and the range is up to 1.7mm. It has pretty good responsiveness and the feed is plenty wet to keep up. This is very nice little Wahl pen.

Waterman 52V – SUPER FLEX (SOLD)

20170124_174217

Waterman 52V – SUPER FLEX

Here a nice Waterman 52V in BCHR. This is one of my favorite sized Watermans. It has the bulk of the 52 and feels like one when posted, but is also compact and portable. The black hard rubber on this pen has turned to a very dark, grayish brown. Chasing is a little worn but still has decent texture. The imprints are very crisp. This pen had no original ring top or clip. The nickel lever looks great with no brassing. The 14kt. Waterman #2 nib is a great nib. It writes as a wet, smooth and springy XF. Very smooth for such a fine nib. It has soft, responsive flex up to 1.8mm. A very quality flex nib.

SIZE:  4 3/8″ Capped

Minerva by Omas Pen Set – Wet Noodle/ Super Flex

20170124_17494420170124_174704

Minerva by Omas Pen Set – Wet Noodle/ Super Flex (SEE PRICE HERE)

Miverva was a sub brand of Omas. The Minerva pens were made with the same quality as that of the main brand of Omas itself. Here we have an amazing set of Minerva lever filling made of black celluloid probably produced in the 30s. Both pens have some light scratching throughout the bodies. The gold filled trim looks pretty good with very little brassing. There is a small nick in the lever of the larger pen. The clip on the smaller pen is loose but still fastened to the cap. The faux alligator leather case is in decent condition. It still clicks shut well, but there is some wear on the top of the case. The nibs, specs, and pictures I will deal with separately.

Large Pen

The 14kt. Minerva nib is a beautiful wet writing F that is soft and springy. Unfortunately, some goober at some point attempted to remove the nib improperly and put a little bit of bend in the back side of the nib (see pic). It does not at all affect the functionality of the pen. It’s just a cosmetic imperfection. It has excellent, juicy flex that goes up to 1.8mm (BBB). It’s not quite a wet noodle, but it is getting close.

Small Pen

This Minerva nib is a beautiful XF with soft flex. It has a range of XF (0.3mm) to BB (1.6mm). It is fabulously responsive. It is not a paint brush wet noodle, but it is quite soft and the quality and crispness of the flex is very high and thus wet noodle grade.

Mabie Todd “Swan” w/ Over/Under Feed – Good Flex (SOLD)

20170110_174251

Mabie Todd Swan w/ Over/Under Feed – Good Flex (On Ebay)

Here is a made in New York Mabie Todd Swan eyedropper with an over/ under feed. The BCHR is still pretty black. Faded a little to a dark, blackish brown. The chasing is present but a bit worn. The imprint on the barrel is still very good. The pen does come with a Swan “repair box” and old eyedropper that was purchased with the pen. The eyedropper rubber is old and I would not advise using it. The 14kt. Swan nib is a very smooth M. Sorry, the measurements on the paper are incorrect. It’s range is about 0.5mm to 1.3mm. The nib is slightly oblique but it writes well at a normal angle. I would say the nib in normal writing is about a 4/10 in wetness. But it is delightfully smooth. The flex on this pen was tough to grade. Ease of flex on this is in the range of super flex, but the range is not great. Nor is the responsiveness. In some ways it acts like a good flex nib and in some ways it is more like a semi-flex. It’s a classic, incredibly old, and still a great writing pen.
