Waterman 0552 1/2 – Super Flex

Waterma 0552 1/2 – Super Flex   (On Ebay)

Here is a beautiful Waterman 0552 1/2 V in the golds-filled basket weave filigree. The pen is in very nice condition. The black hard rubber underneath the overlay, or the very little that you can see of it, has faded some to a dark brown. What’s inside the cap (bottom part of the barrel and section) are still very black. The overlay itself is in very nice condition minimal wear throughout. The end of the barrel does have wear do to posting the cap, but there are none of the usual dings. The gold-filled lever is in pristine condition as is the ring top. I don’t see any brassing on the pen. The 14kt. Waterman #2 nib is a very nice XF. It writes with a good flow and is soft and beautifully smooth. The flex on this nib goes from XF (0.3mm) all the way up to BB (1.6mm) with ease. It also has that quality, bouncy responsiveness so desirable in vintage flex nibs. This is a sturdy, portable luxury item and conversation piece that is also a fine instrument for daily writing and flex art.

Conklin Cresecent 25P – Super Flex

Conklin Cresecent 25P – Super Flex – (On Ebay)

Here is a gorgeous Conklin Crescent in superb condition. Really the only flaw in this pen is that the black hard rubber has faded slightly to browish black. Most would still call this black at first site. The chasing and imprints on the pen are perfect. Crisp as the day it was made. Latest patent date is Dec 1903. The trim is likewise perfect with no brassing and no scratching. The pen literally looks like it was put in a case and kept there without ever being used. To top it all off, this Crescent has a beautiful 14kt. Conklin #2 nib. The nib writes normally as a soft F (0.4mm) with great flow. Flex on this nib comes very easily. So easily, in fact, I would call this a borderline “wet noodle.” It ranges up to BBB+ (1.8mm), and has very good responsiveness. It’s just a phenomenal and collectible 100 plus year vintage flex pen.

SIZE:  5 3/8″ Capped

NIB: 14kt. Conklin #2, F to BBB (0.4mm-1.8mm) SUPER FLEX (See “Grading Flex Nibs” for How I Grade)

  • Nib and feed ultrasonically cleaned
  • Nib and feed tuned to write smoothly with optimal flow

Wahl BCHR Flat Top – Super Flex

Wahl BCHR Flat Top – Super Flex – (On Ebay)

This is a 100 year old Wahl Flat Top in black hard rubber. The black hard rubber has faded to a dark, blackish brown. The Greco style chasing on the body has faded but is still visible. Just a little bit of texture left to it. The pinstripe chasing on the cap (which was originally pretty faint anyway, is almost all gone). The gold filled trim is in excellent condition with no brassing at all. This pen was definitely well cared for. This Wahl also has a gem of nib. The 14kt. Wahl #2 is a very lovely XF (0.3mm) with great flow. Writes quite smooth for an XF. Flex is fantastic with a huge range going up to BBB+ (1.8mm). The responsiveness is very, very snappy. I almost rated this a “wet noodle” due to the quality of the responsive nib, but I couldn’t quite go there because it is just a bit too firm. Still almost anyone would call this a “super flex” or “full flex” pen.

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline – Super Flex (SOLD)

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline – Super Flex – (On Ebay)

Here is a beautiful Skyline in standard size in burgundy with green pinstripe cap with the large gold filled band. It’s a gorgeous and classy Skyline. The body of this pen has typical light surface scratching much of which I have buffed and polished off. There are a few small, but deeper scratches in the cap derby (see pic). The gold filled trim is on good condition except for a little plate loss on the lever and some light scratching on the band. The 14kt. Eversharp nib is a ultra smooth but also ultra wet writing F/M (0.5mm). It is beautiful writer if you like wet nibs. If not, then probably pass. The nib also has some decent flex to it though it lacks the range and responsiveness of higher grade flex nibs. Still it’s a beautiful writer and a gorgeous pen.

Waterman 12 – Super Flex / Wet Noodle (SOLD)

Waterman 12 – Super Flex / Wet Noodle  (On Ebay)

This Waterman 12 eye dropper (pat. date 1903) has a smooth black hard rubber body (no original chasing) with two gold-filled repousse bands. The hard rubber is still very black with very little fading. The imprint on the cap has a little bit of wear but it is still easily readable. The “12” on the end of the barrel looks great with some of the original red paint still present. The gold-filled bands are also in great shape with no brassing that I can see. This 12 is in fantastic condition. The 14kt Waterman #2 is also a great nib. It writes a lovely, wet and smooth XF (0.3mm) line with a normal hand. When flexed the nib has a great bouncy, responsive feel to it. The flex comes very easily going up to BBB (1.6mm). The softness of the nib isn’t paintbrush soft, but I graded it as a high super flex near wet noodle due to its superb responsiveness. This is a perfect example of why vintage flex pens are so appealing.

Onoto (De La Rue) “The Pen” – Wet Noodle

Onoto (De La Rue) “The Pen” – Wet Noodle (See Price Here)

De La Rue is a British pen company that has made great, quality fountain pens for a very long time. They were also the first company to use a plunger filling system. They called these simply “Onoto” which eventually became the name of the pen making branch of the De La Rue company. This pen is loads of fun. The hard rubber body has faded some to a very dark blackish brown. Chasing and imprints are near perfect. This needed a complete overhaul of the filling system (new plunger, rod, cork seals, etc.). These Onoto plunger fillers are quirky but great once you get the hang of them. What makes this Onoto particular fun is the soft, flexy oblique italic nib. The nib has great line variation with downstrokes at 0.7mm and horizontal strokes about 0.3mm (maybe a bit less). It is a lovely, wet and smooth italic nib. That alone makes this pen a blast, but then add soft flex to it and wow. Italic + flex is a fantastic combination. Oblique, italic, and flex is an even better one. Each of these characteristics work to enhance each other. Now these plunger fillers have an interesting ink flow that takes a bit getting used to. Initially this nib will lay down tons of ink, but the plungers were made to eliminate ink gushing and burping so the flow will decrease bit by bit as you use it. Eventually, you will have to twist the end cap of the plunger a quarter turn or so and the process will repeat: heavy flow decreasing in time and then you will have to turn the cap a bit more. Some will find this a fun reminder of vintage writing instruments. Some may find it an annoying extra step. I’m in the former group. Actually, in your writing what you end up getting is all kinds of shading. Dark, sheeny letters at one point, and lighter colors at another. Even without the flex, the oblique italic nib is by itself worth a purchase.

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline – Good/Super Flex (SOLD)

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline – Good/Super Flex – (On Ebay)

This Wahl-Eversharp Skyline comes in a black body with gold-filled trim. The cap on this particular Skyline is the more uncommon vertical pinstripe (as opposed to the horizontal stripe most commonly seen). The body of the pen is in good condition with only light surface marks from normal use that show up due to the glossy black surface. There is no brassing on the gold-filled trim. There is very light surface scratching on the cap from normal use. There are also two small dings on back side of the cap. The clip and lever are in great condition. This pen also has a section with the convenient amber ink window. The window is still pretty transparent and works well. The 14kt. Eversharp is a lovely writing F (0.4mm). It is wet and smooth with a bit of a squeak. The flex on this nib is good ranging up to BBB (1.7mm). Responsiveness is pretty decent. The flex does come a bit stiff for a “super flex” grade, so I’ve graded it somewhere between “good” and “super” flex. Still its a lovely Skyline.
