Waterman 12 – SUPER FLEX (SOLD)

IMG_8268

Waterman 12 Eye Dropper – SUPER FLEX  (On Ebay)

Here is a Waterman 12 Eyedropper with patent dates of 1898, 1899, and  1903. The pen is in excellent condition. Good enough that if you handed it to someone who knew nothing about such things, they would think it is a pretty new pen. The BCHR is black with minimal fading. The chasing and imprints are crisp. The “12” on the end of the barrel is a little worn. This was a clipless model, and I believe predates the clip. The 14kt. #2 Waterman nib is a great nib. It is a wet, stubbish F (0.4mm). As a stub, it isn’t as smooth as a rounded nib, but if you hit the sweet spot it works great. The flex on this nib is excellent. The line variation, while quite good, just doesn’t tell the whole story. The nib flexes easy and with great responsiveness. And it has a great springy, snappy action. Nibs like these make flex writing feel so much easier.

Wahl-Eversharp Gold-Filled Skyline – Super Flex! (SOLD)

IMG_8279

Wahl-Eversharp Gold-Filled Skyline – Super Flex – (On Ebay)

Here is a standard size Skyline with a ribbed gold-filled body. The pen is in good condition with only a few issues. There is some scratching as is typical on gold-filled pens. And there are a few very small dings. I tried to capture them on camera but was mostly unsuccessful. They aren’t very obvious. Also, if you’ve ever cleaned the ribbed gold-filled Skyline caps, you know that it is almost impossible to get all the tarnish out of the tiny crevices. The same is true for this pen. There is a also a small gap between the top of the “sleeve” of the cap and the beginning of the clip/derby section. Having said all that, I can’t find any brassing on the pen. The 14kt. Eversharp nib is a nice, wet, very smooth writing F/XF (0.35mm). It has some very nice flex as well going up to 1.8mm. The flex is quite easy and very smooth. And as is common with a lot of Skylines, you don’t have to worry about ink flow. A real joy to use.

SIZE:  5 1/4″ Capped

NIB: Eversharp 14kt., XF/F to BBB (0.35mm-1.8mm) SUPER FLEX (See “Grading Flex Nibs” for How I Grade)

  • Nib and feed adjusted for optimal flow

Conklin Crescent – Good Flex (SOLD)

IMG_8283

Conklin Crescent – Good Flex – (On Ebay)

Here is the classic Conklin Crescent pen #20. The BCHR has maintained decent color though it is faded to a dark, blackish brown. However, the chasing is almost completely worn off and looks almost like a smooth pen. Imprints are worn, but visible and most readable. The pen appears to have a clip at one time but no longer. The accommodation looks rustic (I kind of like these), has plenty of wear, but does the job well. The crescent filler has some wear but no brassing that I could see. The 14k. Conklin #2 writes as an XXF (0.2mm) and is very smooth for how fine it is. The nib does have two cracks however. One at the base (see pic). It stops before it reaches the “Toledo” imprint and is a surface crack a doesn’t go all the way through. The second crack comes out of the back of the crescent air hole but stops at the “k” in “Conklin.” I’ve put the pen through it’s paces and both cracks seem pretty stable. The nib has some good flex going up to 1.6mm but it is a bit too to be graded super flex.

SIZE:  5 3/8″ Capped

NIB: Conklin Toledo #2, XXF to BB (0.2mm-1.6mm) GOOD FLEX (See “Grading Flex Nibs” for How I Grade)

  • Nib and feed tuned to write smoothly with optimal flow

Venus “President” Pen – Semi-Flex (SOLD)

IMG_8240

Venus “President” Pen – SEMI FLEX (On Ebay)

The Venus pen company was part of the American Pencil Co. This pen dates likely from the 40s. The celluloid body is very similar to that of a Conklin Glider. It’s a beautiful pin stripe design and looks really nice in person. The gold-filled trim is in good condition. Maybe some slight brassing on the sides of the clip, and there are some tiny scratches on the thin band if you look close. There are a few small scuffs on the body, but it is hard to see unless you see in in the light just right. Imprint is good. The 14kt. Venus nib is a soft, smooth XF (0.3mm). It has a nice ball of tipping at the end and writes pretty decently (and even more fine) upside down. The nib has some flex that comes easily and has pretty decent responsiveness. This isn’t a big name pen brand, but it’s still quite a nice pen.

Waterman 3 – Super Flex (SOLD)

 IMG_8202

Waterman 3 – Super Flex  (On Ebay)

Here is a Waterman 3 in green, pearl, and brown celluloid. The pen is very good condition. There is little scratching. The chrome plated trim shows minimum wear. Most of the wear is on the clip but not enough to remove the chrome plating. The pen is inscribed with the name “Harold Deeter.” Imprints all look great. The 14kt. Waterman #2 is a really nice writing nib. It is around 0.4mm but it’s stubbish with some interesting line variation. It feels more like a Medium. It writes smooth, soft, and wet. Additionally, the pen has some really nice flex going up to BBB (1.9mm). The flex is easy taking little pressures and is quite responsive. And the stubbish nib adds definition to the flex writing. Great pen.

Moore BCHR L-92 – Super Flex (SOLD)

IMG_8216

Moore BCHR L-92  – Super Flex

Here is a vintage Moore L-92 in BCHR. The hard rubber is still quite black with only minimal fading. The chasing is still very good. Nice texture and only slightly worn. Imprints are also quite good. It is unfortunately missing the clip (See pic). The gold filled lever has no brassing and looks almost new. The 14kt. Moore #2 nib is fantastic. It is a very soft flex nib that writes glassy smooth. It isn’t overly wet when writing normally. I said it was a 5 of 10 in wetness on the paper, but it might be a little wetter than that. Not much though. The flex goes from XF (0.35mm) to BBB (2.0mm) with little pressure. This is pretty close to a wet noodle. It’s soft and responsive. Overall, it’s a great vintage flex pen.

SIZE:  5 1/4″ Capped

Mabie Todd Swan Sterling Silver Ring Top – Semi Flex (SOLD)

IMG_8228

Mabie Todd Swan Sterling Silver Ring Top – Semi Flex (On Ebay)

This is a New York made Mabie Todd ring top in sterling silver. The ring top is an impressively made piece, but it is quite small measuring 3 1/4″ capped and 4 3/8″ posted. The barrel diameter is about that of a #2 pencil. The sterling silver exterior is in overall good condition. It does have some scratching on the back due to posting the cap. Only light scratching elsewhere. There are also some spots that were heavily tarnished that I was not able to quite polish off. The 14kt. Mabie Todd #1 nib is a nice writing XF (0.3mm) that has a little bit of flex. It doesn’t hold a lot of ink, so it won’t run flex for very long. A gorgeous and super portable pen with some flex on the go.

SIZE:  3 1/4″ Capped

NIB: Mabie Todd Swan #1, XF to B (0.3mm-1.1mm)  MEDIUM FLEX (See “Grading Flex Nibs” for How I Grade)
